	Global Health Reporting Where did HIV come from? In 1999, scientists reported that they had discovered the origin of HIV-1. They identified a subspecies of chimpanzees native to West Equatorial Africa as the original source of the virus. The virus most likely was introduced into the human population when hunters were exposed to the infected blood of non-human primates. What factors make women more vulnerable to HIV infection?

A combination of biological, social, cultural and economic factors contribute to women's increased vulnerability. In particular, gender inequalities prevent women from asserting power over their own lives and controlling the circumstances that increase their vulnerability to infection. Women are also physiologically more susceptible to becoming infected with HIV than men.
